Ysgol Gymraeg Abercynon has lifted this year's Cardiff City FC Foundation EFL Trust Utilita Football Kids Cup qualifiers in partnership with New Directions Education.

170 teams from 114 primary schools from across South Wales entered this year's competition, with six days of qualifying needed to narrow down 32 finalists who went head-to-head on 30th January at Cardiff International Sports Campus.

Abercynon will now travel to the regional finals in Reading to represent Cardiff City FC and take on the other EFL Clubs from the South West region.

A very close final against Penygawsi Primary School saw Abercynon run out 1-0 winners, after convincingly progressing through both the group and knockout stages.

These tournaments give primary school children the opportunity to access competitive sport outside the classroom, further allowing them to life healthy, more active lifestyles.

By encouraging children to participate and develop a love for sport, we’re working alongside New Directions Education to build self-confidence and resilience within young people that take part.

The Bluebirds Charity is running a number of free football tournaments for primary school children throughout the year, you can find out more and sign up here
