Wales has one of the largest proportions of veterans in the United Kingdom, with 7% currently living here. Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan has a veteran’s population of 27,500 and 8% of those suffer with mental health issues including depression and anxiety.

With that in mind, the Bluebirds Charity joined forces with the Royal British Legion and the Sporting Memories Foundation to create the Sporting Memories: The Veterans Project. Through the reach of Cardiff City Football Club, the project will engage with socially isolated, retired and ex-armed forces personnel or those at risk at becoming lonely.

Anthony has been attending the Foundation's Veterans sessions since September and has seen a huge improvement in himself.

“I used to be in a shell that I thought I’d never get out of. I’ve suffered life changing injuries and brain damage, but this project has helped me get over that. I’ve come a long way and I’ve got a purpose now, I’ve grown within myself.”

Working in and around Cardiff as well as the surrounding area, we want to help veterans re-build old connections, develop new relationships and help them become more mentally and physically active.

Working closely with the Sporting Memories Foundation, we have also developed a range of sporting and military reminiscence materials that are used to support those suffering from dementia, as well as working to up-skill and train members of the group and wider community to deliver reminiscence activities.

STAT: 70% of participants at our Sporting Memories sessions felt that they knew much more about Dementia following their participation at the sessions.
